Gesneriads

Gesneriads are flowering houseplants of the African Violet family. The include some of the more interesting varieties such as the Florist Gloxinia (Sinningia), Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus), Flame Violet (Episcia) and over 1000 others.

World Checklist Updated

After much delay, the World Checklist of Gesneriaceae has finally been updated:

This is the first update of the online list in nearly 3 years.  The introductory text is badly out of date, but the checklist itself is now current.  There may be a couple of recently published names I've missed but otherwise the database should be pretty thorough and up-to-date.

This was a major update; nearly 500 new names have been published since the last update and almost 400 of these in 2011 alone.  This is largely due to the recent reorganization of several Old World genera, particularly Chirita.  The majority of the new names are transfers from one genus to another, i.e., only the names have changed.  The total number of entirely new species in the family has gone up by a little less than 100.

Chinese Gesneriad Site

A new website with photographs and geographical mapping of Chinese gesneriads has come online. The site has many photos of uncommon plants.

Check it out here.
